GINGER BEER
Today on the 24 of October we had to make Ginger Beer. All I had to do is squeeze the lemons and write 24/10/09 on about ten wine bottles. One thing that you have to be careful about is the fact that you have to open the bottle with out having your eye over the bottle lid. Because if you do have your eye over it and you open the bottle it might burst out into your eye. Before I started writing on the bottles we had to put a raisin in each bottle. We had to do this because when the raisin is floating on the top of the ginger beer that is when it is ready. The bottles are all sitting in the bath tub and we are hoping that they do not explode! Mum named them sunflower. This is the name of the batch. They are called sunflower as it is almost summer and this is mums favourite flower. Have you guys ever made ginger beer?

I have. I made it when I was living in this weird as house in Kaitaia. It was really funny and there were these nutty as people that I lived with. This on little kid kept on re-arranging his bedroom cause he wanted to sleep standing up against the door.
ReplyDeleteWhat a weird guy. But his mum was worse. She never used to eat at all, would only drink bourbon and smoke cigarettes. But don't worry. She doesn't smoke the cigarettes anymore.
Well we may have a few issues - we used a very old recipe from my grandparents and it said 1 oz of yeast. So we weighed the yeast on the cooking scales - it looked quite a lot - maybe 2 tablespoons full. Anyway since then I have google searched ginger beer bug recipes and most use 2 teaspoons of yeast! mmmmm! Anyway we bottled it today and the raisens are already at the top of the bottles. It took them about half an hour and its supposed to happen in 3 - 5 days. I had some syrup left over and so I put it in a soda stream bottle with water and fizzed it. Disaster struck. It fizzed everywhere. All over me. All over the kitchen. All over the cupboards and the floor right into the lounge. I think we may have exploding bottles in the bathroom. If they blow I will start the bug again with less yeast. Crazy stuff!
ReplyDeleteWell, it certainly seems to be a memorable experience. Possibly not for the intended reasons, but memorable none the less.
ReplyDeleteI do remember Corry making macaroni cheese and using 2 cups of flour instead of 2 tablespoons. Not quite as messy, but possibly less edible.
Nope - haven't made ginger beer, but I have drunk my fair share. Go Bundaberg!! You could call yours Bondyberg.
